Marc-Antoine Charpentier 1643-1704 Sacred Music Vol. 4 - Motets Litanies à la Vierge. In the seventeenth century, devotion to the Virgin Mary, pleader of man's cause with God the Father and God the Son, was fired by the Counter-Reformation. The numerous prayers to Mary set by Marc-Antoine Charpentier perfectly reflect this Marian fervour. Many motets are based on liturgical texts others resort to neo-Latin verses of independent inspiration, whose authors are often difficult to identify. Sacred Music, Volume 4: Motets, Litanies à la Vierge. This selection of Marian motets illustrates not only a devotion towards the Virgin Mary but the composer's ability to convey moods ranging from the festive and sumptuous to the personal and intimate. Marc-Antoine Charpentier 1643-1704 was a French composer of the Baroque era. He was a prolific and versatile composer, producing music of the highest quality in several genres. His mastery in the composition of sacred vocal music was recognised and acknowledged by his contemporaries. With its founding director, Hervé Niquet, Le Concert Spirituel has distinguished itself in leading concert halls in many different countries, among which can be numbered its yearly visits to the Salle Pleyel and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and to the Château de Versailles. Hervé Niquet is far less interested in being known as a Baroque music specialist than for his passionate interest in all of French music, especially its vocal and lyrical compositions and nowadays he is as liable to be found directing a symphony orchestra as his own period instrument ensemble Le Concert Spirituel.
