Brooklyn-based pianist and sound sculptor Marco Benevento has completed his third full-length studio album in as many years, Between The Needles & Nightfall, available May 11 through his label The Royal Potato Family. Between The Needles & Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin Pavement, AkronFamily tracked Marco Benevento and his trio, featuring bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr, over three days. Marco Benevento proves himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era with the release of Between The Needles & Nightfall. He blurs genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation. The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of 'It Came From You' to the simply-stated lullaby 'Ila Frost' to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem 'Two Of You. Benevento's third album, Between the Needles and Nightfall, was released in 2010 and his fourth album, Tigerface, was released in 2012. Tigerface features singer Annakalmia Traver of the band Rubblebucket and drummer John McEntire of Tortoise. Throughout all of his recordings Benevento plays an acoustic piano that is amplified by using pickups and effected with various effect pedals. With his third solo album, Between the Needles and Nightfall, Benevento and his trio have no need for words on any of the 11 songs on this collection here as they overdub baby grand piano and a multiplicity of string arrangements with electronic sound-crafters. With his 2009 album Me Not Me, Benevento took popular songs by Leonard Cohen, My Morning Jacket, and others, re-interpreting them to his own liking. The albums title track Between the Needles kicks off as an inhibited piano ballad that livens up midway through with the help from its passionate percussion counterpart and then fades off with quiet ambient sounds. Between The Needles & Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin Pavement, AkronFamily tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. On Between Needles and Nightfall, Benevento is joined by his usual trio, which features Reed Mathis on bass and Andrew Barr on drums.
