Despite using synths exclusively, Mark Ayres achieves a wonderfully dark and sinister atmosphere with his score to the well-regarded 1989 three-parter Ghost Light. Dispensing with the customary Doctor Who theme music and jumping right into the score itself, Ghost Light is a mini-film-score unto itself, with percussion, haunting scary synths aplenty, and layered strings building the atmosphere relentlessly.
