Principally Irish, the members were also unusually young. With this lineup in place, the band released their only album, Swaddling Songs Deram Records, which Songs is the only studio album released by Irish progressive folk band Mellow Candle. Mellow Candle's sole album Swaddling Songs is a lost progressive folk gem from 1972. This is the story of this unique band and that album. Mellow Candles is a story in two chapters, the first starting in 1963 when a group of three Irish lasses studying at a convent in Dublin named themselves The Gatecrashers and started singing together. Clodagh Simonds, Alison Williams then Alison Bools and Maria White were rooted in that periods pop and folk music and listened to American girl groups, Helen Shapiro and Bob Dylan. Filled with multi-layered harmonies and complex arrangements, this unfortunately underlooked album of beautiful, flowing, and wonderfully recorded British folk-rock originally released in 1972 has been a favorite of record collectors for years. Luckily, the strength of the music holds up beyond its scarcity.
