Videos, images, and links about the great German composer. Mendelssohn composed the majority of the works in the programme as concert overtures, spanning the length of his career, from the early Ein Sommernachtstraum A Midsummer Nights Dream, composed when he was just sixteen, through to Ruy Blas, written towards the end of his life. He composed two of these overtures as the opening movement of larger works: Paulus, his first great oratorio, from 1836, and Athalie, incidental music written for Racines play. Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, known generally as Felix Mendelssohn 18091847 was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn was born on 3rd February 1809 in Hamburg, Germany into a notable Jewish family his grandfather was the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. His sister Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel contributed six compositions to the first two songbooks published under his name Op. His parents, Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn, were baptized a few years later. To acknowledge their new spiritual identity, the family adopted a second surname, so that Felix Mendelssohn became Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Abraham intended that eventually his family would omit the Mendelssohn name altogether. His son never did so, however, and continued to sign his letters and publish his music under his dual name. The issues of religious identity and intra-faith tolerance are critical to our understanding of the composers life and work
