Album

Two Blocks from the Edge is Michael Brecker's fifth album as a leader. It was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City. It was recorded in 1998. All tracks composed by Michael Brecker except where indicated. Madame Toulouse - 5:19. Two Blocks from the Edge - 8:32. Bye George Joey Calderazzo - 6:59. El Niño Joey Calderazzo - 7:41. Cats Cradle Joey Calderazzo - 6:43. The Impaler Jeff Tain Watts - 7:13. How Long Til the Sun - 7:39. Delta City Blues - 5:37. Although Michael Brecker made his initial reputation as a greatly in-demand studio player able to play quite credibly in commercial settings, his recordings for Impulse have all been strictly straight-ahead. Displaying his roots in John Coltrane and Ernie Watts, Brecker has developed his own approach to sheets-of-sound playing while not being shy about playing quite lyrically. Savage Garden Truly Madly Deeply. Check out the title tune, Two Blocks from the Edge. Brecker alternates between full-bore high-energy passages and quiet moments of spontaneous and clich'-free lyricism. This tour de force is a marvelous example of the man's mastery of his instrument, but it is only one highlight of this album. The more relaxed and bouncy Bye George and the dusky ballad Cat's Cradle display Brecker's emotional versatility. The Impaler may refer to the tricky harmonics of the tune, which of course Brecker navigates with confidence. How Lon. Michael Brecker has long been considered one of, if not the most innovative and influential saxophonists for the last couple of decades. His use of unconventional techniques and syncopated melodies have made many jazzer feel bad for not practicing, myself included. On Two Blocks from the Edge, Brecker takes his art to a new level. With haunting melodies driven by his quite capable rhythm section, Brecker drifts into contemporary improvisation. This album is worth buying for the last track itself, Delta City Blues.
