John Churchill, then Master of Music at the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Neville Marriner later Sir Neville founded the orchestra as The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, a small, conductorless string group. And this version by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is absolutely sublime. It often brings tears to my eyes. Especially when I hear it during the holiday season. Well did the pious Salieri in the memorable fictitious film look at Mozart's life wonder how God could make divine music flow from the soul of an impious fool. May such divine ironies multiply. Any music that emerges from under Marriner's baton is precise, a feature that serves particularly well when Mozart is on the stand. Nevertheless, precision does not here supplant passion.
