The Academy of St Martin in the Fields ASMF is an English chamber orchestra, based in London. John Churchill, then Master of Music at the London church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Neville Marriner later Sir Neville founded the orchestra as The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, a small, conductorless string group. The ASMF gave its first concert on 13 November 1959, in the church after which it was named. In 1988, the orchestra dropped the hyphens from its full name. Conducted by Neville Marriner. 24 starts with a dramatic theme that resembles the opening of Haydn's Symphony No. 78, written two years earlier, but Mozart makes much more of it, highlighting its chromaticism, tonal leaps, and syncopation. Again, there is no extant cadenza, so Brendel plays one based mostly on the principal theme. The tranquil second movement Larghetto, again in ABACA form, is more artful than its seeming simplicity suggests. The brilliance of the pianist's role in these variations is astounding and reminds us once again that Mozart was truly a musical genius
