A clarinet quintet is a work for one clarinet and a string quartet two violins, a viola and a cello. Although originally written for basset clarinet, in contemporary performances it is usually played on a clarinet in A or B-flat for convenience's sake. Gervase Alan de Peyer 11 April 1926 4 February 2017 was an English clarinetist and conductor. Gervase de Peyer was born in London and attended Bedales School. He was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he studied clarinet with Frederick Thurston and piano with Arthur Alexander. Towards the end of World War II, when he was aged 18, he joined the Royal Marines Band Service.
