The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work was premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer's premature death. There are several very good to great DVD performances available, Munich, Hamburg, Met1991, Salzburg1982 and Glyndebourne. This production is not quite up there, but I found myself enjoying it a lot. It is heavily abridged though, which makes the story less cohesive and what is cut is some quite beautiful passages.
