Charles Ellsworth Pee Wee Russell March 27, 1906 February 15, 1969, was a jazz musician. Early in his career he played clarinet and saxophones, but he eventually focused solely on clarinet. With a highly individualistic and spontaneous clarinet style that defied classification, Russell began his career playing Dixieland jazz, but throughout his career incorporated elements of newer developments such as swing, bebop and free jazz. Pee Wee Russell played clarinet with many groups from the mid-1920's through the 1960's. He played with Pecks Kelly's Bad Boys, many Red Nichols groups, Eddie Condon groups and Louis Prima. He recorded extensively with Nichold, Condon and Prima. In late 1930 he joined the Condon band at Nick's in Greenwich Village, NYC where he was a regular throughout the 1940's. After a layoff because of illness he free lanced through out the 1950's and 60's. His style is instantly recognized: ascorbic and low keyed. As time passed, he adopted his style, but neve read more
