Nas' sixth studio album, Gods Son, was released during a very trying time in his life. While he was in the middle of the battle with JAY-Z, his mother passed away from cancer in April 2002. Both events had an influence on the content of the album-hardcore hip-hop mixed with melancholy music. The backdrops for this mixture were provided by Salaam Remi, Alicia Keys, Chucky Thompson, Ron Browz, Eminem and The Alchemist. The title is inspired by one of his tattoos and he said the following about the album: Gods Son is my most personal album and I poured my heart and spirit into it. God's Son is an emotional album, imbued with recent experiences in Nas' personal life, particularly his bout with Jay-Z and the unfortunate death of his mother, Ann Jones. These experiences had challenged the self-reappointed King of New York, attacking both his street status and his heart, and he in turn looked within, embracing both his craft and his spirit. Album 2002 14 Songs. Far from the grandiosity of his late-Nineties period, Nas uses the tracks on Gods Son to speak directly to the listener. Built from a reconfigured Beethoven sample, I Can is a sincere song of encouragement, directed towards black children: Nobody says you have to be gangstas, hoes, Read more, learn more, change the globe. In many ways, God's Son is lyrically superior to Illmatic. Nas has created an album that is at once mournful and resilient, street-savvy and academic. As an MC, he's technically stunning. His arsenal of flows would make even Jay jealous and likely does after Guns N' Roses, and manages to be both rhythmically versatile and intellectually astute. On God's Son, Nas does all these things, effectively taking a bat to his one hot album every ten year average. Understandably, God's Son is Nas' most emotionally raw album to date. The Cross finds Nas playing the role of hip-hop martyr, while The Last Real N gga Alive provides a semi-objective look at his duel with Jay-Z. Over the tracks odd 68 tempo, Nas raps, This world is my home but world I would leave you. Sam Chennault. About This Album
