Album
Ophelia is the title of a 1998 album, film, and song by Natalie Merchant. Kind & Generous was the most successful single of the album, reaching the Top 20 in the U. whilst Merchant was on tour with Lilith Fair. Break Your Heart also received single and video treatment. These and the other videos from the album, plus three from Tigerlily, were gathered on a Warner Music Vision home video, also entitled Ophelia. From the album Ophelia. Ophelia was a bride of God, a novice Carmelite. In sister cells the cloister bells tolled on her wedding night. Ophelia was a rebel girl, a bluestocking suffragette who remedied society between her cigarettes. Ophelia was a sweetheart to the nation overnight. Curvaceous thighs, vivacious eyes, love was at first sight. Love was at first sight. Ophelia was a demigoddess in prewar Babylon, so statuesque a silhouette in black satin evening gowns. Ophelia was the mistress to a Vegas gambling man, Signora Ophelia Maraschina, mafia courtesan. Ophelia was a circus queen, the fe. Its follow-up album, Ophelia, is a bit more problematic. Initially, the album appears to be conceptual, tracing the Ophelia character through modern times. That concept quickly falls away, leaving studied, if somewhat elliptical, lyrical portraits. Like Tigerlily, the songs on Ophelia have hushed, layered arrangements that are outgrowths, not replicas, of 10,000's jangly folk-rock. However, Ophelia lacks the subtle sonic textures and graceful hooks that made Merchant's debut so charming. Listen free to Natalie Merchant Ophelia Ophelia, Life Is Sweet and more. 11 tracks 56:28.
