Mirror Ball is the 21st studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, and features members of American rock band Pearl Jam. It was released on June 27, 1995 through Reprise Records. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA in the United States. The album's recording sessions took place in January 1995 and February 1995 at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle, Washington. The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien, who had previously worked on Pearl Jam's 1993 album, Vs. and 1994 album, Vitalogy. Neil Young uses Pearl Jam on Mirror Ball much as he has used his perennial backup band Crazy Horse, looking for feel and spontaneity. At the start of the record, he can be heard instructing them: No tuning, nothing, and the take of I'm the Ocean is an obvious run-through that became a master take. Its hardly a secret that Neil Young loves Pearl Jam and vice versa. When the band opened for Young in 1993, he often brought them out during the encores for a run through rockin in the Free World when Young was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it was Pearl Jams Eddie Vedder who did the honors, pronouncing the singer a great songwriter, a great performer, a great Canadian. That this mutual-admiration society would eventually result in an album was probably inevitable, but even so, its hard not to be surprised by the spin Mirror Ball puts on the relationship.
