Other Belgian architects who worked alongside Horta include Paul Hankar and Henry van de Velde, both of whom influenced and were influenced by Hortas innovative spirit. In addition to his famous townhouses, Horta also designed the Magasins Waucquez, a textile department store that is now the Belgian Comic Strip Museum. One of his finest achievements, La Maison du Peuple completed in 1899, was a massive headquarters and event hall for the Belgian Workers Party, whose iron-and-glass façade was the first of its kind in Brussels. In 1917 Van de Velde settled in Switzerland, lending support to many emigrants and building a close friendship and collaboration with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. In 1920 he was appointed architect for Anton Kröller and Helene Kröller-Müller in The Hague, to return to Belgium and take up a professorship in Ghent in 1925 and found the La Cambre design school in Brussels in 1926. Between 19261936 Van de Velde had numerous private and public commissions in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany before he retired in 1937.
