Fight Songs is the fourth studio album by American alternative country band Old 97's, first released on April 27, 1999. It features the song Murder Or a Heart Attack, which was ranked 176 on Blender magazine's list of 500 Greatest Songs From 1980-2005. The group's second record on Elektra Records, Fight Songs is more slick and pop-oriented than the group's previous efforts, a trend continued on 2001's Satellite Rides. Texas troubadours Old 97's moved farther away from their traditional C&W sound on their 1999 release, Fight Songs, instead incorporating warmly distorted guitars and crunchy rhythms into their brash pop songs. Thankfully for fans of the band, the terrific songwriting is still there, but the sound is a little more polished than the twang-a-billy bombast of their previous album, Too Far to Care. What Fight Songs amounts to is a collection of insipidly pleasant, well- executed pop songs of some distant relation to country and, as such, a harrowing disappointment. Gone is Rhett Miller's quirky wordplay- it's replaced with platitudes aplenty. Miller's vocals, a welcome respite over the edgier tunes gracing Too Far to Care, abets the band's pop intentions, only exacerbating matters. Now, irony of ironies, I sit here with this shoddy Old 97's disc- diligently packaged and delivered by Elektra Records- while the latest Luna release sits in import limbo.
