Laulik-elektroonik LP by an ex-pat Estonian musician Olev Muska is the new release of Estonian archival label Frotee Records. The compilation subtitled as Explorations in Estonian Electronic Folk Music - The First Years, 1979-1983 brings together all Muska's Estonian-themed songs recorded prior to his debut album from 1985, Old Estonian Waltzes. For its 10th release, Frotee has expanded its scope and is now also offering insights into quality music by Es. Bonkers, plugged-in Estonian folk and electronics from the 1980s, courtesy of Olev Muska, a recent star of Left Ear Records Antipodean Anomalies compilation. Working a stylistic niche perhaps comparable to recently. Drawing on his studies at Sydneys National Art School, as well as a love of psychedelia and the possibilities afforded by cheaper, newly availed synths and vocoders that complemented the stripped down, runic nature of Estonian music, Muska reframed traditional Estonian folk songs in an unprecedented way, with results that range from novelty to freakish experimentation, often in the same track.
