Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi 22 September 1952 23 January 2019 was a Zimbabwean musician, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa Region. Tuku was considered to have been Zimbabwe's most renowned and internationally recognised cultural icon of all time. Mtukudzi grew up in Highfield, a poor neighborhood in Salisbury modern-day Harare in Southern Rhodesia, as the eldest of seven siblings. While both his parents sang in a choir, they were. Capitalizing a bit on his time with Putumayo, this period is labeled as The Tuku Years - essentially his time with producer Steve Dyer, putting out a slightly fuller sound than in his previous albums. The songs come primarily from the three previous albums on Putumayo, with Tuku Music providing three tracks, and Paivepo and Vhunze Moto each contributing a track. I bought this album after seeing Tuku live in Washington and while it doesn't generally have the drive and life of his live gigs it is a good review of his work. Good to create that mood of Africa and contains great Zimbabwean style guitar work. If you enjoy African music you'll enjoy this.
