Notes
The original album version of Messages was due to be used. However, McCluskey objected to this version and wanted to re-record the song. Most copies of the original 10" pressing with the album version were scrapped, but a handful did escape destruction. Some of these were given away as part of a competition for the OMD fan club in 1980.
This version correctly credits Mike Howlett as Producer. Blue label release.

Messages is the third single of the synthpop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD, released in 1980. The song originally featured on their eponymous debut album, but a re-recorded version provided OMD with their first Top 40 hit single in the UK, reaching number 13. As with debut single Electricity, Messages features a melodic synth break instead of sung chorus. Messages - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. Messages, though it would later benefit from a far more stunning reworking, still wears the emotion of its lyrics on its sleeve, with a killer opening line - It worries me, this kind of thing, how you hope to live alone and occupy your waking hours - and a melody both propulsive and fragile. The mysterious chimes and spy-movie dramatics of Red FrameWhite Light inspired by a phone box are almost as striking. We are determined to make even more effort for our fans in Australia and New Zealand. In the meantime we ask all of you to keep your tickets - and keep the faith We guarantee our live shows will be worth the extra wait Thanks to all . Although Humphreys left the group in 1989, McCluskey made a comeback in 1991 with the UK top 5 'Sailing On The Seven Seas', and followed that up with a UK top 3 Album 'Sugar Tax' before finally calling it a day in 1996. In 2007 they toured together again featuring the classic line-up of Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper and released a live-album in 2008: 'OMD Live: Architecture & Morality & More'
