Standing Stone is Paul McCartney's second full-length release of original classical music coming after 1991's Liverpool Oratorio and was issued shortly after the release of Flaming Pie. The world premiere performance was held at The Royal Albert Hall on 14 October 1997. Following up on 1991's Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio, the Standing Stone project was composed out of a long poem McCartney authored to describe the way Celtic man might have wondered about the origins of life and the mystery of. Standing Stone based on an extended poem written by Paul himself was Pauls second full-length release of original classical music and was given its world premiere performance at The Royal Albert Hall in October 1997. As Paul explained, I dont divide my tastes into liking rock music or classical music. I just like good music. As a composer, even with the resources of the London Symphony Orchestra at his disposal, McCartney assembles his music as though he were constructing an album of pop songs, presenting a series of moods and melodies more notable for their contrasts and discrete effects than for any unity. The composer remains a facile melodist, which is an important quality in classical as well as pop music, and there are aural pleasures here and there. The pieces is not 'typical' McCartney there is no overbearing theme as you might expect in a typical symphony or rock piece. Instead, this album is pure creativity. It's described as a tone poem - a classification I agree with. It starts with a chaotic string performance, not unlike many modern compositions
