Us is the sixth studio album by the English singer-songwriter and musician Peter Gabriel, released on 28 September 1992 by Real World Records. Following the release of his soundtrack album Passion in 1989, Gabriel started work on new material for a new album, his first since So, which became his biggest selling release. Gabriel focused on personal themes on Us, including his divorce in the late 1980s, his subsequent relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette, and the growing distance between himself. Secret World 'US', which was released six years after the phenomenally successful 'So', was, at that time, arguably Peters most personal record yet, as he stepped into the confessional to explore and dissect many of the relationship issues he was then experiencing. The album also continued the now well-established Gabriel motif of mixing high technology with decidedly analogue contributions from musicians from West Africa, Egypt and Armenia. Reunited with Daniel Lanois as co-producer, Peter extends the hand of collaboration to Led Zeppelins John Paul Jones, Brian Eno, Peter Hammill and Sinead OConnor. Although US was not nearly as big a seller as So, Im pleased that it is now getting better regarded, with hindsight, and I think it has some of my best songs on it. Clearly, that great span of time indicates that Gabriel was obsessive in crafting the album, and Us bears the sound of endless hours in the studio.
