NOTES: Music in Twelve Parts, written by Philip Glass between 1971 and 1974, is a deliberate, encyclopedic compendium of some techniques of repetition the composer had been evolving since the mid 1960s. It holds an important place in Glasss repertory not only from a historical vantage point as the longest and most ambitious concert piece for the Philip Glass Ensemble but from a purely aesthetic standard as well, because Music in Twelve Parts is both a massive theoretical exercise and a deeply engrossing work of art. Tim Page. PUBLISHER: Dunvagen Music Publishers. RELATED RECORDINGS. Music in Twelve Parts is a set of twelve pieces written between 1971 and 1974 by the composer Philip Glass. This work cycle was originally scored for ten instruments, played by five musicians: three electric organs, two flutes, four saxophones two soprano, one alto, one tenor and one female voice. Only the organ can be heard throughout the other instruments are not playing simultaneously the whole time. Only one piece was originally written, which was called Music in Twelve Parts because it was. It is a four-hour-long work divided in 12 movements and rendered in a twelve-part texture, here performed by three woodwinds, three keyboards, and the singing voice of Lisa Bielawa. Its a piece of music that has evolved so much. Favorite track: Music in Twelve Parts : Part 1. Album 1992 12 Songs. The Philip Glass Ensemble & Philip Glass. Music in Twelve Parts: Part 2. Glass' early work, especially Music in Twelve Parts is riddled with arpeggios. Yet, while there is definitely an electronic keyboard driving the pulse of the piece from start to finish, the true quality of the piece is displayed in the other musicians, especially the woodwinds, who must not only keep pace, but who must also be able to change key and delve into further slight variations on the drop of a dime. Music in Twelve Parts may, indeed, sound minimal and abruptly simple, but the endurance required when playing such a piece requires immense skill and precision. Be sure to keep your e.
