Ackroyd has obviously studied 20th and 21st century piano music, as well as composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Reilly, and Michael Nyman. But the seven pieces on the 31-minute Escapement are unquestionably her own. All of the music made here was composed and performed on just two instruments - piano and violin. Poppy Ackroyd has just released Escapement through Denovali Records, her debut album in which she examines the potential that lies beyond traditional structure and composition. Her musical roots are evident on Escapement, which bears all the hallmarks of a wonderfully composed classical piece, however, what it manages to do is create an extension upon the grounds which a traditional composition is based. Poppy Ackroyd's Escapement is an aptly named debut because, despite being a reference to piano mechanics, it also references the thematic concept of the album. The music is meant to provide a momentary departure from reality that really takes its listener away into its own trancing environment, offering a perceptual experience filled with melodic splendor. Escapement is of a rather different nature than that encountered in the albums of Poppy Ackroyd's primary musical group, Hidden Orchestra. Escapement is just as elaborate in its aesthetics, but this album is a bit more personal. Poppy Ackroyd is a British composer, pianist and violinist and a regular member of the live project Hidden Orchestra. She is known for her non-conformist approach to producing sounds and while her debut album consisted of violin and piano played by Ackroyd, her most recent album, Resolve, incorporated improvisation from Manu Delago, Jo Quail and Mike Lesirge.
