Sergei Prokofiev wrote his Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major Op. 100 in Soviet Russia in one month in the summer of 1944. Fourteen years had passed since Prokofiev wrote the first version of his Symphony No. 4 in C. World War II was still raging during the symphony's gestation, and Prokofiev composed it in the Soviet Union. He gave out in a statement at the time that he intended it as a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit. Владимир Ашкенази, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Jamie Walton, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Philharmonia Orchestra. Listen this afternoon to Rossinis Ouverture La gazza ladra and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, conducted by Mariss Jansons. Principal flautist s Symphony No. Sergei Prokofievs Fifth Symphony was composed during the Second World War and was therefore referred to as his war symphony. At the time of its premiere in 1945 the Soviet Union was well on track for a victory over Germany and the worst of the war was soon to be over. Prokofiev himself said politically correctly about the Fifth Symphony: I thought of it as a work glorifying the human spirit. I wanted to sing of mankind free and happy his strength, his generosity and the purity of his soul. Mariss Jansons, chief conductor. Mariss Jansons has been music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra ever since 2003. Performers are Ashkenazy, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra. Symphoy No. 5 was recorded with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchesrra in the 1980's, and the sound and orchestral playing are superior to those of the LSO. Unfortunately, the 5th symphony is the one most often recorded and Ashkenazy thus has a lot of competition from many great conductors, such as von Karajan, Dorati, Szell and even Jarvi. However, Ashkenazy still manages to deliver a solid performance. Recording location: Kingsway Hall, London 1974-1975 Publishers: R.
