For a recording of Maria Callas as Tosca, the 1953 studio recording remains first choice, though her involved 1952 Mexico City live performance with Giuseppe Di Stefano and Piero Campolonghi, in inferior sound to 1964, should not be overlooked. Though I admire Callas greatly for her meticulous preparation and intense commitment in all her roles, I am not always fond of her voice. There are other live Tosca performances with sopranos who run Callas close interpretively, but have more beautiful voices. Maria Callas fans will no doubt contemplate my perceived lack of taste while they savour this. Carlo Felice Cillario 7 February 1915 13 December 2007 was an Argentinian-born Italian conductor of international renown. 1 Biography. In 1964, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London at the request of Maria Callas, conducting her now famous series of Tosca performances with Tito Gobbi. Tosca was the last opera that Callas performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. It afforded her a triumphant return to the opera stage after an absence of nearly 18 months. Scarpia was sung by her beloved colleague Tito Gobbi, another natural stage animal, and the sumptuous production was by Franco Zeffirelli
