This 1961 LP showcases Ray Charles' skills as a jazz pianist in two settings: one with a trio and another with a septet led by Quincy Jones that features plenty of tenor sax solos from David Fathead Newman. Brother Ray was such a big star at this point that this soulful hard bop instrumental set did well on the pop charts. Nick Dedina. About This Album. Album 1961 8 Songs. R&BSoul 1961. Milt Jackson. Have to be honest I don't know a lot of Ray Charles's music and this is only the third album of his that I have bought but I am really enjoying what I have heard so far. This SACD is instrumental so if you love Ray's piano playing this is for you. He is not Monk but he was still one hell of a player
