Album
Ray Columbus & the Invaders were a rock group from Christchurch, New Zealand that was active from 1964 to 1966, fronted by the lead vocalist, Ray Columbus, a musician, television host and manager. Part of the new surf music craze, they were the first New Zealand band to have a number 1 in another country, Australia, with their cover of The Senators' song She's a Mod. 16-track compilation includes all of their key singles: She's A Mod and the N. hits C'Mon And Swim, Now You Shake, Till We Kissed, and Yo Yo. According to the liner notes, The Yardbirds' management considered having the band cover the moody, bluesy Now You Shake as a single in early 1966. With 30 songs, this is about twice as long as the only other Columbus anthology that has been at all available to international consumers Epic's 1981 vinyl collection Anthology. Being twice as long, however, does not necessarily mean twice as good. The songs here that were not included on Anthology are largely run-of-the-mill, whether they're shopworn covers like Shakin' All Over and Poison Ivy, Shadows-type instrumentals, or less familiar tunes.
