Album

Supernova is the fifth studio album by Ray LaMontagne, released by RCA Records on April 29, 2014. The title track serves as the album's lead single. Supernova garnered generally positive reception from music critics. At Rolling Stone, Will Hermes rated the album three-and-a-half stars out. With his impeccably weathered tenor croon and mastery of Seventies singer-songwriterisms, Ray LaMontagne can often seem in danger of disappearing into his beard. So its a blessing that he connected with producer Dan Auerbach for his fifth album. Predictably, Auerbach helps the singer pull bright colors from the Sixties crayon box less predictably, he makes it seem a perfectly logical progression of LaMontagnes 10-plus years of cozy vibes. On the title track, LaMontagnes marble-mouthed phrasing comes wrapped in a dream of hand claps, organs, Mellotron and glockenspiel motifs. Ray LaMontagne photographed by Wesley Mann on April 29, 2014 at Q Division Studios in Somerville, Mass. The blues of Trouble hinted at a sad existence for LaMontagne. A decade on, the joyous, just-released 'Supernova,' flips the script. It's just after noon on April 29, and Ray LaMontagne's new album, Supernova, is sitting at No. It has been more than 10 years since the cult favorite of folk, roots and classic-rock fans released the emotive Trouble, which turned decades-old blues and soul usages. Album 2014 10 Songs. Supernova Ray LaMontagne. LaMontagnes new album, Supernova, reflects a shift from a roots sound to the floating harmonies and early psychedelia of the 1960s. Visiting Ray LaMontagne is like going back to another century. The question is, which one Mr. LaMontagne, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, lives with his family in an 1830 farmhouse that sat empty and abandoned for 50 years before he restored it. Having arranged to meet for an interview at Elmers store, a social center of this picturesque Berkshires town since 1835, he pulled into the parking lot in a shiny blue 1928 Ford Model A. So although Supernova represents the idealistic and exospheric possibilities for LaMontagne after 10 years in the industry, what gets lost in the experimentation is the emotional connection previously forged through clear playing and exposed lyricism. Full Review. RCA , Producer: Dan Auerbach. Score 910. This brooding troubadour sounds as if he is enjoying himself immensely on this latest opus. Maybe its something special that producer Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys brought to the studio, but the sonic reference points are enthralling: San Francisco psychedelia on Lavender and No Other Way, Brit pop on Smashing, dreamy ambiance with Pick Up a Gun, Van Morrison on Airwaves and garage rock with Julia. LaMontagne has never sounded this multi-dimensional. No wonder he seems so exultant: Supernova reveals a glorious soundtrack for the summer
