Herbert von Karajans first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. It was the beginning of a new era. Richard Strauss Don Quixote, Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character, op. 35 46 min. Ulrich Koch Viola, Mstislav Rostropovich Cello. Herbert von Karajan held Richard Strauss in the highest esteem both as a composer and as a conductor. Of Strausss many tone-poems none meant more to Karajan than Don Quixote which he first conducted in Aachen in 1939. In Berlin in 1976, he entrusted the solo role to the Berliner Philharmonikers own distinguished principal cellist Ottomar Borwitzky. Among the many qualities Karajan revered in Strauss was his mastery of the musical epilogue. Stream Strauss, R. Don Quixote Horn Concerto No. Exclusive discount for Prime members.
