The year is 1988 for Now And Zen and it seems to be time for Plant to really cut loose and this he does. Gone are the sterile guitars and out come the Marshall stacks. Although most of the album is comprised of mid-tempo songs aimed at rock radio, Plant includes the lovely ballad Ship of Fools, which demonstrates that he is more than capable of vocal subtlety. Plant, who often uses mysterious and mystical lyrics, writes some of his most direct songs, and the way in which the lyrics complement the melodic arrangements are partially responsible for the commercial success of Now & Zen. This is Robert Plant's best solo album, and a must-own for fans of Led Zeppelin. Page and Plant recorded their only post-Zeppelin album of original material on the 1998 album Walking into Clarksdale, an effort that was unsuccessful commercially, leading Plant to return to his solo career. A song from this album, Please Read the Letter, was re-recorded by Plant with Alison Krauss, and was featured on their 2007 album which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. A DVD titled Soundstage: Robert Plant and Strange Sensation, featuring his Soundstage performance filmed at the Soundstage studios in Chicago on 16 September 2005, was released in October 2006. Delivery was fast an the album was well protected. Robert Plant manages to sound very 80s on this album with a couple of tracks supported by Jimmy Page on guitar lead breaks. I bought this album for the track Ship of Fools which is a personal favourite of mine, and Heaven Knows, but I was pleasantly surprised by 2new favourites Tall Cool One with its Led Zeppelin sample at the end and The Way I Feel.
