Don't Fear the Reaper 11. Crystal Days Cut With the Cake Knife was recorded by Rose McDowall in 1988 and 1989 following the break up of her group Strawberry Switchblade. Produced with the aid of several musicians in several studios, the album features songs written for the fabled second Strawberry Switchblade album. More importantly, perhaps, it showcases the honest, direct and life-affirming songs of one of the greatest unsung songwriters of the modern pop era at a tumultuous time in her career. Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. Purchasable with gift card. Fantastic pop record from Rose McDowall, member of Strawberry Switchblade and collaborator with artists like Felt, Current 93, and Death in Cake Knife, McDowall has created a kind of aural Candy Land, one where she can break off vanilla bark from Jujyfruit trees while she sings about death and despair. While a comically cartoonish bass and hyperactive synths jitter and pop around her, McDowall beckons a lover closer before announcing in its deliriously euphoric chorus, I will take you by the hand and lead you To my sunny side and I will Cut you with the cake knife Right between the eyes. In Mc. Songs in album Rose McDowall - Cut With The Cake Knife 2004. As her band Strawberry Switchblade began to fall apart in 1985, Rose McDowall was left in limbo. Not sure that she wanted to be part of the music industry she despised, yet not willing to give up on making music, she kept recording songs between 1986 and 1988. Some were meant for a second Strawberry Switchblade album that never appeared, some were solo efforts, but none of them were released at the time. Rose has only recently reappeared - a comeback from the Syd style seclusion that this release of this album - 11 demos from shortly after the break up of Strawberry Switchblade. An interesting curio from a great pop artist who refused to play the game, Cut The Cake Knife, is also conversely pop perfection. Previous articleNew Order: Music Complete album review.
