Chronicles is a double compilation album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1990. The collection was the band's first album to be released in the 1990s, though it was assembled without the participation of the band. Rush's second collection of videos reminds us of why, perhaps, they are first and foremost an 'audible' experience. Chronicles: The Video Collection includes 12 clips from mid-period Rush, 1977 to 1987. Six selections are taken from previously released videos, including Tom Sawyer and Red Barchetta from Left, Subdivisions and Distant Early Warning from Through the Camera Eye, and Red Sector A from Grace Under Pressure. The Big Money, which includes early computer animation and a Monopoly-like stage, was issued as a bonus clip on the original Grace Under Pressure video collection. Two gems are Closer to the Heart. Rush, built around Lee's unique vocal style and Lifeson's rhythm-lead techniques, released a self-produced album, Rush, on the independent Moon Records label. The album is a crudely effective representation of the band's live sound at the time. The album also marked a musical evolution for the group, away from the slabs of sound that dominated the heavy metal approach to the nuanced, trance music patterns and dramatic stop-time arrangements that would become a Rush trademark. Rush had come of age, as the tremendously popular followups, the live All The World's A Stage and two more conceptual albums, A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres, proved. Chronicles is aptly titled, as the videos follow Rush's 30-year evolution in fashion, performance, and visual representation. Loyalists may wish for a lengthier selection, but with remastered Dolby 2-channel stereo, this 63-minute disc clearly improves upon the VHS release. But Rush is a classic band, and every fan deserves a video on a high quality and almost permanent format. I recommend this video to all fans, but also to Jazz listeners that want to start their Rock collection. Of course, I recommend it all progressive rock listeners, and most of all, to all those people that like the combination of genius words put on very artistic music.
