Notes

Very few early English songs survive. Continental modal forms, fused with lost musical structures and traditions of the ancient Celts, combined to create a uniquely English monodic song form.
The exceptionally beautiful St. Godric Songs (c.1150), are the earliest known songs in the English language. They are exquisitely performed here by the legendary countertenor Russell Oberlin, possibly the greatest countertenor of our century. This recording also features Seymour Barab on English fretted Viol, both under the musical direction of Saville Clark. Includes extensive liner notes by Saville Clark and William Bittner.

Countertenor Russell Oberlin with Seymour Barab, fretted tenor viol. The St. Godric Songs, Worldes music written during the Middle Ages. Periods, eras, and movements of Western classical music. Early period. Medieval music consists of songs, instrumental pieces, and liturgical music from about 500 A. to 1400. The Persian geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih of the 9th century d. 911 cited the Byzantine lyra, in his lexicographical discussion of instruments as a bowed instrument equivalent to the Arab rabāb and typical instrument of the Byzantines along with the urghun organ, shilyani probably a type of harp or lyre and the salandj probably a bagpipe. Medieval Songs List. Early medieval music was primarily ecclesiastical in nature, with different forms of religious chants developing independently in different parts of Europe. Notable among these were the Celtic chants, the Gallic chants and later, the Gregorian chants. By the High Middle Ages, these instruments were also used for secular music which primarily emerged from the troubadours of southern France, especially Provencal. Secular music from this period, given its association with the troubadours, is noted for its ideals of courtly love and chivalry. Machaut composed music in 14th century France and was one of the foremost composers of the time. Worldes Blis Ne Last Throwe - Russell Oberlin, Seymour Barab.
