Russian Circles is an American instrumental band based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The band was originally formed by childhood friends Mike Sullivan and Dave Turncrantz after their previous musical projects dissolved. After parting ways with their original bass player Colin DeKuiper in 2007, the trio was rounded out by Brian Cook. The band has gained widespread recognition based on a series of critically acclaimed albums and extensive international touring. Their name is taken from a drill. Released 2008. Station Tracklist. Whereas Mogwai are spiky and slightly oblique, Mono are purple-hearted and passionate, and Explosions in the Sky muck about in major key clouds, Russian Circles are efficiently precise. Clean tones ring cleanly, but so do the dirty ones. The rolling 68 of Station is essentially Viking metal, evoking raised fists and frostbitten beards. Sullivan's riffing is vigorous, but as the only guitarist, that's all he can do. The riffs beg for vocals, melodies, some sort of top layer instead they're just a robust foundation
