Rutland Boughton 23 January 1878 25 January 1960 was an English composer who became well known in the early 20th century as a composer of opera and choral music. His oeuvre includes three symphonies, several concertos, part-songs, songs, chamber music and opera which he called music drama after Wagner. His best known work was the opera The Immortal Hour. All but one of the works on the present disc are dedicated to Joy in full, 'Joyance' Boughton 1913-63, the oboist daughter of the composer Rutland Boughton. Joy was a pupil of Leon Goossens. In 2014, after being approached by Ian Boughton, Mark Baigent performed Boughton's Oboe Quartet No. 2 at Glastonbury as part of the centenary celebrations, which in turn led to this recording. He has also played a part in recordings of Rob Keeley, Pepusch, Torelli, Vivaldi, Boismortier, Harty, MacMillan and Richardson and is a member of the Denner Ensemble.
