He wrote this work for the Belgian cellist, viola da gamba player and instrument maker Auguste Tolbecque. Tolbecque was part of a distinguished family of musicians closely associated with the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, France's leading concert society. The Suite is the version that Saint-Saens prepared from his early Suite for Cello and Piano, and has a different concluding movement. While the Tarantella is charming, I wish Saint-Saens had undertaken orchestrating the powerful movement of the Suite with piano he felt it was simply too pianistic for orchestrating- and surely he was right. After listening to this album and comparing it to a version on my iPhone im not sure I can say SACD really sounds any better than normal CD sound quality. The album is great but I don't hear a difference.
