Is Scarface's 'Deeply Rooted' album worth your time The Boombox gives the rapper's project a listen to find out. Deeply Rooted is about what one would expect from a late-era Scarface album. The LP probably won't rank in the upper echelon of his projects with The Fix and The Diary. His best works are most likely far behind him at this point in his career. What we do get with this album is a solid work filled with consistent bars. Few of the tracks may hold up to I Seen a Man Die and Guess Who's Back, but that doesn't mean he still can't spit. This is elder statesman rap, a good-to-great, front-to-back listen made for hip-hop heads and Scarface completionists. Deeply Rooted was criminally overlooked by much of the music press, despite it being arguably Scarfaces greatest lyrical work. Coming out just before his book Diary of a Madman, the album had big shoes to fill if it were to compete with the stories he put forth in print. At 18 tracks, the record never feels too long, because as an emcee he draws you in to his world, sits you down, makes you a cup of coffee, and proceeds to pour his heart out. Im bringing words. Im bringing the beat. Im bringing the beat back to the village. I wanna spark thought among the people in our village. Deeply Rooted Q&A. But does the album bear fresh fruit or rotten throwaways As the title suggests, Deeply Rooted finds Scarface reconnecting with the Houston hood that raised him. What keeps this retread fresh is that Scarface approaches the content from a more mature perspective this time around. Theres a righteous indignation against racial injustice and a need for self-preservation that Scarface directs toward his circumstance.
