The first single to be released was the track Stay Captive, which was followed by Dancing with the Enemy. The lyrics and title for the song Avalanche are inspired by the role-playing video game Final Fantasy VII. The Serpent reached number 95 in the UK Albums Chart. This self-titled debut album was recorded in 2000, but ultra-fast and ferociously heavy tracks like Violent Torture, Pestilent Seed The Plague, and Sadistic Abuse sound like they could have been recorded in the 1980s or early '90s. Even the band's look recalls thrash's glory years: long, straight hair and black leather motorcycle jackets with black t-shirts. The morbid lyrics, many of which deal with Satanism and the occult, are pure death metal, and the sound of the band is unapologetic thrash.
