Album

The Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107, has a certain slyly menacing quality in its outer movements that Weilerstein catches to the hilt, while she brings lyrical warmth to the broad Moderato slow movement. 2, Op. 126, is a haunted, and in Weilerstein's hands, a haunting work. Shostakovich composed these two concertos for cello and orchestra in the space of seven years, and for the same peerless performer, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The two concertos are, in Weilersteins own words, like apples and oranges, so different are they. Concerto no. 1 1959 starts with cello. Moderato Dmitri Shostakovich Alisa Weilerstein Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks Pablo Heras-Casado. Celebrated young cellist Alisa Weilerstein presents Shostakovichs two cello concertos, accompanied by the Bavarian Radio Symphony under Pablo Heras-Casado, in performances recorded live. Weilerstein worked on both these cornerstones of the repertory with legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, for whom the concertos were written and who was a great friend of the composer. Here, she performs the intense, challenging and emotionally suppressed Cello Concerto No. 1, contrasted by the sarcasm and isolation of the Cello Concerto No. Alisa Weilerstein returns with Shostakovich's cello masterworks: Concertos 1 & 2. Weilerstein's interpretation is underpinned by her meeting Rostropovich - a close friend of the composer and the cellist for whom both works were written - when she was 22, playing Shostakovich for him and absorbing his advice and wisdom. Alisa is joined by conductor Pablo Heras-Casado and the Symphonieorchester Bayerischen Rundfunks. Sunday Times, 18th September 2016 Weilerstein follows outstanding Decca recordings of. Cello Concerto No. By Дмитрий ШостаковичAlisa Weilerstein, Pablo Heras-Casado & Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. This is the only one of Shostakovich's six concertos to end quietly it is concluded with an eerie exchange of the cello and woodblock, and draws to a low close. Although the piece makes great use of unusual instruments common in 20th-century work as well as in Shostakovich's and has a rather irregular structure, the themes are evenly distributed and played in equal measure.
