Notes
Live recording from March, 1982, in Leningrad
This record is produced with an incorrect pitch, a semi-tone sharp, due to too fast tape speed. A correct transfer can be found in Russian Disc (RD CD 10 917), or Alto (ALC 1150). The latter can be viewed here: Symphony No. 8

Album 2011 5 Songs. More By Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 Pathétique. Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. The Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65, by Dmitri Shostakovich was written in the summer of 1943, and first performed on November 4 of that year by the USSR Symphony Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky, to whom the work is dedicated. It was named the 'Stalingrad Symphony' by the USSR. The symphony does not appear on concert programs very often, yet many recent scholars have ranked it among the composers finest scores. Although some have argued that the work falls within the tradition of other C minor. Conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky not only gave the premiere of the symphony, but was the only conductor to receive a dedication on one of Shostakovich's symphonies. Another interesting note is that this live recording was originally released on the Philips label to immense critical acclaim, but it was later discovered that it was burned to the disc at a half-step too high in pitch and a corresponding ratio faster than the actual performance.
