Issued in the UK by Polydor Records in 1978, the track was written by Banshees members Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, John McKay and Kenny Morris and produced by their manager Nils Stevenson and a young sound-engineer Steve Lillywhite. Steve Severin recalled to Mojo magazine May 2014: 'Hong Kong Garden' had happened in the same way as all our early songs: McKay would present the beginning of a chord sequence and would work around it, shape it, arrange it.
