Album

SARABAH: Tales From The Flipside Of Paradise. Sister Fa. Many Lessons: HipHop, Islam, West Africa. Listen free to Sister Fa Sarabah: Tales From The Flipside Of Paradise Milyamba, Selebou Yoon and more. 12 tracks 48:57. Album 2009 12 Songs. More By Sister Fa. Sarabah is a brilliant debut, filled with hard and funky beats that are nicely softened by Sister Fa's lovely singing and nimble rapping. Seebou Yoon puts a reggaeton beat and a sweet melody to work harmonizing hip-hop with Islam Hip Hop Yaw La Fal and Sister Fa La both let some air into the musical texture while keeping things very funky with some fine turntablism Soldat saunters into reggae territory, with lovely results. Sarabah: Tales From the Flipside of Paradise received a lukewarm review from Jon Lusk of the BBC, who wrote that too much of the album consists of fairly pedestrian or annoyingly sing-songy melodies that echo playground chants like Poum Poum Pa or seem transparently aimed at the ring tone market. In The Daily Telegraph, Mark Hudson gave the album. 3 out of 5 stars and wrote that Diatta pits her gutsy verbalising against exquisite traditional melodies on this well-crafted debut. As with most of her compatriots, Sister Fas take on the genre eschews the guns, gangs n bling culture celebrated by much modern hip hop. Instead, her lyrics tackle serious social issues such as HIV, arranged marriages, female genital mutilation and the role of Islam. Nevertheless, too much of the album consists of fairly pedestrian or annoyingly sing-songy melodies that echo playground chants like Poum Poum Pa or seem transparently aimed at the ring tone market. Struggle breeds compassion, and Sister Fa uses her international album debut Sarabah - Tales from the Flipside of Paradise to speak out against the injustices rampant in her native country. Warm, groovy and unmistakably African, her raps, in Wolof, Manding, Jola and French, Fa La, 04:05. Assoukatene, 04:30. Bou Souba Si Ngone, 04:14. Now playing: The Weeknd Blinding Lights.
