Ché was an American stoner rock band founded by former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork, former Queens of the Stone Age drummer Alfredo Hernández, and of Liberation were a Philadelphia-based vanguard jazz septet founded by vibraphonist Khan Jamal. The group also included alto saxophonist Byard Lancaster, guitarist Monnette Sudler, drummer Dwight James, percussionist Omar Hill, bassist Billy Mills, and conguero Rashid Salim. Sounds of Liberation released one self-titled record in 1972. It reflected the African American spirit of self-determination in an era that also birthed independent labels like Detroits Tribe Records, Oaklands Black Jazz, and Charlies Tolliver&. Sounds of Liberation: American jazz collective formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the early 1970s. They got their start in the progressive neighborhood of Germantown, Philadelphia. The band had close ties to the Black Arts Movement of the time, using their music to help spark social activism, with tremendous impact on the African American and jazz community in Philadelphia. The band played for their community, for students, and for prison inmates as other acclaimed musicians of their time did like Johnny Nash and Bob Dylan.
