Album

Actor is the second album by musician St. Vincent, released by 4AD on May 4, 2009, in the United Kingdom and a day later in the United States. The first single released was Actor out of Work that April. Annie Clark was influenced by scores to films by Disney and Woody Allen. To prevent writer's block, Clark watched films without the sound and composed music for her favorite scenes. After arranging the music using GarageBand, she then wrote lyrics and added gentle vocal melodies. Vincent is the eponymous fourth studio album by American musician St. It was released on February 24, 2014, in the United Kingdom and a day later in the United States, through Loma Vista Recordings and Republic Records. Produced by John Congleton, it features collaborations with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss and Midlake drummer McKenzie Smith. The tracks were arranged and demoed by Annie Clark in Austin, Texas and recorded at the Elmwood studio in Dallas. About Actor. Vincents sophomore release where she captured something closer to her now signature style: Dark witty lyrics with distorted lush guitars. Film is a surprisingly large influence this time around as Annie Clark watched several Disney films from her youth on mute and composed music along to her favorite scenes to create sharp atmospheric soundscapes. Vincent's Annie Clark is a unique talent. Things are murkier, but no less fascinating, on Actor, Marry Me's darker and more ambitious follow-up. Musically and lyrically, the album often feels like a duel and occasionally, a duet between Clark's collected, literate side and her raging emotions. This is especially striking on Actor's arrangements and instrumentation, which are even more expressive than they were on Marry Me. Vincent - Actor review: Actor shows the potential and talent that St. Vincent ultimately holds. The mystique of Actor can all begin with The Strangers. A tidy and fitting opening track which transforms from cute to daring before angelic hymns whisk away the beautiful mess created. The Strangers and Actor as a whole may not live up to the pop-sensibilities found in Now Now from Marry Me per se, but the rich and harmonious sound is still there. Vincent is rather well versed at integrating darker, heavier sections with harmless, fragile portions found in tracks like The Neighbors and Marrow. With such in-song diversity, Actor floats by with little hesitation or disturbances. It was a huge achievement that still barely hinted at what was to come. Actor was, in many ways, very much of its time and place, the late 00s stretch of baroque-pop Brooklyn indie. Clark excelled within that milieu, and the album solidified her as one of the emergent names at the tail end of last decade. And within its DNA, you can already see the blueprints for where St. Vincent would go. Its a moment that both represents Clarks talent crystallizing and still feels rooted in another era, prefiguring how far behind she would leave those origins. Vincent released in 2009 via 4AD.
