RIP Joao Gilberto 1931-2019, your music and persona will never be forgotten. Joao Gilberto was the creator of the Bossa Nova, his entire discography is overshadowed by the peerless GetzGilberto album which featured Girl from Ipanema from a year before, GetzGilberto 2 still holds its own with an appealing selection of fine jazz and bossa nova cuts. Unlike the first album's seamless collaboration by Getz, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, here Getz and João Gilberto turn in separate sets recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October of 1964. The album GetzGilberto, brought together saxophonist Stan Getz, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim. This album was a key event in creating a bossa nova craze in the United States and, subsequently, internationally. Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of GetzGilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit it was a good thing he did.
