Album
The Second is the second studio album by Canadian-American rock band Steppenwolf, released in October 1968 on ABC Dunhill Records. The album contains one of Steppenwolf's most famous songs, Magic Carpet Ride. The background of the original ABC LP cover was a shiny foil, in contrast to later MCA Records LP issues and the modern CD sleeve. Featuring a style that incorporates psychedelic music and hard rock, the release has received critical acclaim both when it came out as well as in later years. Steppenwolf the Second embraces everything from hard rock to psychedelia to blues, and the band is in excellent form, playing very hard and edgy, except on the deliberately lyrical, reflective Spiritual Fantasy, a rare acoustic number for the group. Much more to the point of the group was the single Magic Carpet Ride, the ultimate psychedelic pop dance number of the decade, and the marijuana anthem Don't Step on the Grass, Sam, the pounding 28, and the album-opener Faster Than the Speed of Life. What follows is one of two WAY overplayed Steppenwolf songs, Magic Carpet Ride. We all know what the other is, do I need to go there The words are, of course, a little silly, but deep lyrics don't often comprise hit singles. The first, self-titled Steppenwolf album of 1968 is the one that fast-tracked them to fame and fortune, fuelled by the anthemic Born To Be Wild. It was certified gold by the RIAA in November that year, but in chart terms, there was even better to come. Within nine months of the debut album came The Second, and this time it was gold in just four months. That certification, for shipments of half a million copies, arrived on 12 February 1969.
