This Japanese import collects 18 tracks from Sting's numerous film contributions, few of which ever achieved the popularity of his album cuts. It's an odd assortment that leaves out recent successes such as his Oscar-nominated work on Cold Mountain, and there's nothing here from 1982's excellent Brimstone & Treacle soundtrack, one of the artist's first forays into a solo career. My Funny Valentine: Sting at the Movies isn't dreadful, but it will probably appeal to die-hard fans only. The additions are amazing especially My Funny Valentine, which is all you'd expect it to be: a quiet, thoughtful reading by Sting closely mic'd and accompanied by an upright bass and soft piano arrangement. Think 'Moonlight. Until' reminded me of the b-side 'This was never meant to be. My Funny Friend and me' is nice and the Irish flavored 'the Mighty' sounds like it could've been on the Mercury Falling CD.
