Crime of the Century is the third studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in September 1974 on A&M Records. Crime of the Century was Supertramp's commercial breakthrough in both the US and UK, aided by the UK hit Dreamer and the US hit Bloody Well Right. It was a UK Top 10 album and a US Top 40 album, eventually being certified Gold in the US in 1977 after the release of Even in the Quietest Moments. Supertramp came into their own on their third album, 1974's Crime of the Century, as their lineup gelled but, more importantly, so did their sound. The group still betrayed a heavy Pink Floyd influence, particularly in its expansive art rock arrangements graced by saxophones, but Supertramp isn't nearly as spooky as Floyd they're snarky collegiate elitists, an art rock variation on Steely Dan or perhaps a less difficult 10cc, filled with cutting jokes and allusions, best heard on Bloody Well Right. Supertramps third album, as well as their mainstream breakthrough, Crime of the Century is a loose song-cycle centered around the inner struggles of a depressed man. The album was borne out of the frustrations of dual frontmen Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. From 1969-1972, they had helmed an earlier incarnation of Supertramp which released two critically beloved but commercially unsuccessful albums. When the rest of the band quit, Hodgson and Davies found themselves back at square one, with little funds or direction, and on a deeper level, they felt existentially lost, being in their mid-20s. The very best album Supertramp ever released. Breakfast in America certainly took a more pop mainstream approach and is an acknowledged classic that all love but his is a must-own. It really can't be compared to any other music by any other band at the time and the musical twists and diverse styles as Hodgson and Davies sparred to find the right sound are mesmerizing listen from start to of my favorite recordings of the 70s.
