Ancient Airs and Dances Italian: Antiche arie e danze is a set of three orchestral suites by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, freely transcribed from original pieces for lute. In addition to being a renowned composer and conductor, Respighi was also a notable musicologist. His interest in Italian music of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries led him to compose works inspired by the music of these periods. Antonin Dvorak and Leos Janacek, both Czech composers, are featured on this disk along with their most famous works: Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 and Janacek's Sinfonietta. I have always preferred Dvorak's 8th symphony over the very popular Symphony No. 9 From the New World. Of course then, I always root for the underdog. The symphony is teeming with creative and diverse melodies, and sets them in interesting ways. The first movement has five or six melodies stuck in it, ones different from one another, each imaginative.
