East of Eden is the second studio album by Taken by Trees, the solo project of Swedish musician Victoria Bergsman. The album was released on 7 September 2009 by Rough Trade Records. Bergsman travelled to Pakistan to record the album, and several of the album's songs incorporate influences from Pakistani music. The song My Boys is a cover of the Animal Collective song My Girls with some minor lyric changes. The song Anna also features Animal Collective member Noah Panda Bear Lennox on backing. Following the release of Taken by Trees' 2007 debut, Open Field, Victoria Bergsman and her trusty recording engineer, Andreas Söderström, traveled to Pakistan to record TBT's second album. They had to battle for a travel visa the Swedish government warned them that travel to Pakistan was dangerous. Which it was - Bergsman was literally carried off by some locals shortly after the duo arrived in Pakistan the fact that she was an unmarried woman evidently made her public property. On East of Eden, Bergsman transports us to Pakistan where she traveled and recorded, indulging her affection for the late singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and for Qawwali a type of Sufi devotional music, popular in southern Pakistan. The end result is astoundingly effective. There are many lovely moments of cross-cultural pollination, like the swirling, Qawwali field recording Wapas Karna, the mournful Swedish language Tidens Gång, and the rippling, exotic strings on tracks like Watch the Waves. East of Eden is the second album by Victoria Bergsman's solo-project Taken by Trees. Victoria travelled to Pakistan to record the follow-up to her of Eden is Victoria Bergsmans second album under the Taken by Trees band name.
